Technology has always had a measurable effect on athletics. Especially, as it pertains to an athlete’s health. As with most endeavors the more money that's involved, the more people want to control outcomes. This has lead to the positioning of pro sports as a proving ground for new and innovative procedures and products. Things like sweat resistant fabric and knee brace design steadily improve as athletes at the highest levels continue to provide usable data.

To this end, cloud computing provides the same benefits in the sports world as it would any other sector. As sports continue to scale upward, effective data management only becomes more pivotal. Not only do we have to ensure the safety of client's data, we must be able to utilize that data effectively to provide an ever improving product. The wearables realm is one area we're paying a lot of attention to because they allow our clients to collect a massive amount of data unobtrusively. Without the tools created by the "Big Data" push a small company like ours couldn't expect to effectively capitalize.

Big Data utilization equals less significant "busts" in sports. Analytics not only helps scouts find real talent, it helps coaches put together truly effective lineups and grade personnel.

The smaller the organization the more the IOT matters. For us it's really changed our expectations regarding Data Utilization and Income Modeling. Initially the data we gathered was purposed solely for improving our base product. As the push for data driven results increased we realized that the data itself could be offered as a valuable commodity.

Despite the unassailable benefits there are so many companies (especially small businesses) that don't utilize the thousands of free/low cost tools available through mobile computing. Whether it's Google Hangouts or Wunderlist we make sure that if there is a freemium, scalable tool that will help us maximize profit we're going to explore it. Though it can sound like an oxymoron, I advise all CIO’s to innovate within the space of what you know to be working. For example, when contracting a company to design your website or application, make sure that they at least have a firm grasp on google’s material design guidelines. It’s important that the contractor be aware of tools like the Google Mobile Friendliness Test, and Google Resizer. This shows that the contractor is well aware of current mobile trends and intends to build a site that takes advantage of Google’s SEO requirements.

I understand that it can be difficult for the person in charge of making long term decisions to be well versed in the newest trends, but this is what’s required of those who want to succeed in sectors where expectations change daily. I would tell aspiring and current CIOs - Use your technology prowess to increase your range as an executive. Whether you learn marketing from the Google Prime app or take advantage of free Harvard Business School courses; free ubiquitous technology helps us to create and manage our best selves.
